I Will Never Forget Cardella / Jonathan Pearl
I first became aware of Cardella de Milo over 20 years ago when I saw her arrive at the Paradise Cafe in Long Beach for her singing gig that evening. While she was still an extremely voluptuous and elegant woman, I kept thinking how she must have appeared during her younger days as a performer. To this day, I've yet to see an early photograph of Cardella.
When I mentioned Cardella to musician friends, they told me her main focus then was staging and hosting talent discovery and award nights at nightclubs. By showcasing those starting out in the business and also honoring veteran performers, Cardella shrewdly filled these venues with family and friends of the featured acts.
Years later, I met Cardella in a different setting. It turned out we both shared the same auto mechanic, the late Alex: "Spiderman" White, who was also a talented blues musician. I was at Spider's garage to discuss a planned recording project, but Cardella was there because she had serious car trouble. Such circumstances are never the best time to talk to someone, but I took a chance and approached Cardella, telling her I' remembered her from that show at the Paradise Cafe. She quickly threw her arms around me and hugged me. Mind you, this was not a quick, facile show biz hug, but as warmly sincere an embrace as you could imagine or experience.
That was the last time I saw Cardella, and I'm so glad I got the chance to meet her as the truly real person she was.
